Business Background
Behind the cool air and beautiful landscapes of the Malino highlands in Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi, lies a long-standing concern for local coffee farmers. For years, the presence of civets (luwak) in coffee plantations was viewed as a damaging pest. Civets frequently visited the farms during harvest season to consume the finest, ripest, and sweetest coffee cherries, leaving behind significant crop losses for the local community. However, this perspective began to shift when the potential behind the civet’s natural biological process was realized. Civets instinctively possess an extraordinary skill that humans do not: they select and eat only the coffee cherries at their peak ripeness. The natural fermentation process inside the civet’s digestive tract then breaks down the coffee proteins, reducing bitterness and creating a uniquely smooth, highly prized flavor and aroma profiles. Driven by the vision to turn a challenge into an opportunity, Kopi Luwak Malino emerged as a bridge for this transformation. What was once resented as a pest has now been transformed into a natural partner and an economic blessing.By collaborating with local farmers, we shifted the dynamic with civets from conflict into a sustainable and ethical management system. We implement high standards of animal welfare alongside post-harvest processing education for the farmers. Coffee that was once dismissed as waste or ruined by civets is now hygienically and professionally processed, commanding a market value multiple times higher than before.Today, Kopi Luwak Malino does not only produce one of the most exclusive and highly valued coffees in the world. It also stands as a symbol of harmony between humans, nature, and wildlife—while serving as a primary driver in elevating the welfare and standard of living for the coffee farmers of Malino.
