In many states (but not Massachusetts), the marriage of a minor automatically emancipates him or increases his or her legal rights beyond the minor`s permission to consent to certain medical treatments.  The minimum age of marriage was 13 for men and 12 for women, but formal commitments could and often took place in advance. The Talmud advises men to marry at the age of 18 or between the ages of 16 and 24. John in Warsaw, the average age of married women was 20.1 years and that of men was 23.7 years. In the second half of the eighteenth century, women in the parish of Holy Cross married at 21.8, while men married at 29.  The 55 Parties to the 1962 Convention on Consent to Marriage, Minimum Age for Marriage, and Registration of Marriages have agreed to legislate on a minimum age for marriage to override customary, religious, and tribal laws and traditions. If the age of marriage according to the law of a religious community is lower than that provided for by the law of the country, the law of the State prevails. However, some religious communities do not accept the primacy of state law in this regard, which can lead to child or forced marriage. The 123 parties to the 1956 Supplementary Convention on the Abolition of Slavery agreed to introduce a mandatory minimum “reasonable” age for marriage. In many developing countries, official age requirements are only guidelines. Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States, and its inhabitants are U.S.
citizens. In Puerto Rico, the general age of marriage is 21, as that is the age of majority. The general age of marriage in Puerto Rico is 21 or 18 with parental consent.  In Guam, the general age is 18, but 16-year-olds may marry with the consent of at least one parent or guardian.  In American Samoa, the age of marriage has been 18 for both sexes since September 2018. Previously, the age of marriage for women was 14.  American Samoa does not allow marriages with minors. In the District of Columbia, the general age is 18, but 16-year-olds may marry with exceptions.  In the United States. Virgin Islands The age of marriage is 14 for women and 16 for men.  In the Northern Mariana Islands, men must be 18 to marry, while women can marry at 16 with parental consent. However, in 1753, the Marriage Act, promoted by Lord Chancellor Lord Hardwicke, stipulated that all marriage ceremonies had to be performed by a minister in a parish church or chapel of the Church of England to be legally binding.

The codification of Islamic family law in the Ottoman Empire in 1917 distinguished between the age of marital jurisdiction, which was set at 18 for boys and 17 for girls, and the minimum age of marriage, which followed the traditional Hanafi minimum age of 12 for boys and 9 for girls. Marriage before age is allowed only if proof of sexual maturity is recognized by the court, while marriage before the minimum age is prohibited.
